The Stockton Conversations
The Stockton Conversations is an annual series of discussions to present ideas on developing an Australian spirituality, using this term in its broadest context.
The series is named after the Rev. Dr Eugene Stockton, an ordained Catholic priest and archaeologist who has worked to highlight the ancient occupation of the Blue Mountains region by Aboriginal people and spent much time listening to them and learning of their culture and spirituality. Fr Stockton has published widely on this and the need to develop an Australian spirituality.
Such an Australian spirituality would need to take into consideration the Australian continent, its relative physical isolation, the spiritual and cultural significance of the Land itself, the cultural and spiritual traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the place of Christianity in society, and Australia’s multicultural identity.
The series will be sponsored by the Blue Mountain Education and Research Trust (BMERT).
The speakers will be usually, but not exclusively, an Australian, selected by BMERT, with the intention to stimulate thought and conversation on Australian spirituality.
The format of the Conversations may vary from year to year.
The proceedings will be published annually as a booklet by BMERT.
